House System
At Great Baddow High School each tutor group is attached to one of three houses. The houses are represented by three inspirational individuals who have outstanding life achievements and have given back to society.
These individuals provide role models whose lives display values and qualities that students can aspire to and lessons they can learn from.
They comprise of:
Sir David Attenborough
Steven Hawking
Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill
The house system creates an identity and sense of belonging within the wider school and students feel loyalty to their house that often lasts well beyond their years at the school. Each house has its own character and customs and students appreciate being involved in maintaining and developing these creating a truly cohesive environment.
The school prides itself on its very active House System which allows students and staff to feel more connected to and involved with the community around them. It facilitates discussions between the most junior and most senior of school, fostering friendly competitive spirit along the way.
The house system encourages students to participate in many different types of extra-curricular and educational activities in a positive competitive manner which rewards students at the end; this allows for students across all year groups to come together as a part of the school community and work as part of a team.
Older students are given the opportunity to develop their leadership skills to support house competitions, for example, leading charity activities, organising house team events, supporting younger students, addressing assemblies and engendering the house spirit.
The house competitions run across all subject areas including sporting activities, performances in music and drama, art and baking competitions, as well as the running of quizzes and partaking in charity events. Funds are regularly raised for charities during competitions and students get the opportunity to share their work and performances in the house assemblies too.
Many of the House competitions are linked to national campaigns and events, such as British Science Week which is promoted across the whole school as part of our Science Specialism, National Careers Week and LGBT+ History month. They are used to raise awareness of key issues, such as the importance of recycling, mental health awareness or supporting national charity events such as Children in Need or Christmas Jumper Day. Students particularly enjoy our annual Baddow Bake Off competition and of course our Sports Day competitions where the houses really come to the forefront with students decorating House Banners to cheer on their house and tutor groups.
We celebrate the successes of all our students who strive to achieve their best in all aspects of their life in school. The House System gives our students this opportunity to be rewarded for efforts and achievement in all areas. Students regularly earn house credits for excellent work but the primary aim is to encourage all students to get involved in the many inter-house competitions within subjects and extra-curricular activities.
Competition between the Houses is fierce and always very close and exciting.
