Nine of our deaf students attended a ‘Deaf Sports Day’ event in St Albans on Wednesday 5th July. The event was organised by Heathlands school, and we were keen to attend to enable us to meet and socialise with other deaf teenagers whilst taking part in some friendly competition against other resources bases and specialist schools for deaf children; Heathlands, Heathcotes and Knightsfield.

Our students were impressed with the venue and facilities ‘this running track is better than any we have used before, as it is clear where you need to run and it’s not slippy!’

Students took part in field events such as Shot put, long jump and high jump. Plus running events such as 400m, 200m, 100m sprint and 60m sprint. There was some tough (and very tall!) competition.

The event gave our students exposure to others in the deaf community and were surprised at the speed at which some used British Sign Language.

We were also able to meet with male and female deaf adults running the events-which gave us excellent role models. Whilst putting our students productive and receptive signing skills to practice.

We were very proud of how our students behaved and represented Great Baddow Resource Base for Deaf Students. Overall we came 3rd place with some students receiving individual 1st, 2nd and 3rd place rosettes.

We look forward to attending the event again in July 2024!
